New To Using An Elliptical? Make Sure To Follow These 4 Tips

Blog

Have you recently signed up for a gym membership so that you can use their cardio equipment? One popular piece of equipment is the elliptical machine, which is popular because of the low impact that it provides as an alternative to running. Rather than just get on the elliptical and start moving, it will help to know the following tips about using it.

Step On The Foot Platform In A Down Position

It helps to know the right way to get on an elliptical machine. You will always want to step on the foot platform with the pedal in the down position. This helps keep the machine stable while you move onto the other foot pedal. It may seem simple, but it can catch someone off guard when the pedal starts moving under the weight of one leg.

Focus On Your Body Position

Having the right body position is crucial to ensure that you are getting a good workout. Always make sure that your back is straight and that you are not hunched over on the elliptical machine. This will help you work your core muscles and allow you to work out longer. Your hands should be on the handles with a full grip and placed at or below the height of your shoulders. Try not to place your hand on top of the handles and push them forward with the palms of your hands.

Remember To Use Your Hands

You should be actively using your hands to push and pull while moving on the elliptical. This helps work out those muscles in your upper back and chest to give a full-body workout. If you are putting all the pressure on your feet to push the pedals and just move your hands, then you are missing out on the full effect of working out on an elliptical machine. On a similar note, do not perform all of the movement with your arms either.

Keep Your Foot Flat On The Platform

As you are moving your legs on the elliptical, it's important that you keep your foot flat. It may be tempting to push down by lifting your heel and pushing down with the plantar portion of your foot, but that is going to put a lot of pressure on your ankles and knees. A flat foot will actually engage the muscles of your thighs and hips in a better way.

multitask to include exercise in your busy day

As the mother of three, I have a hard time finding enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to be done. My doctor told me that I needed to increase the amount of exercise that I was getting each day. I laughed at him and told him that I didn't have more than 10 minutes to shower each day. He continued to explain all of the benefits of finding the time to exercise and I told him I would try. I started looking for information about mothers finding time to exercise and found out that a lot of exercises can be done while doing other things. Find out how to multitask and include exercise in your day without losing any time.
